No Prison For Sailor Sexually Assaulted 3 Men Latest

Ex-serviceman gets community service for assaulting three sailors on navy ship HNLMS Karel Doorman
On Monday, a 37-year-old ex-soldier from Den Helder was sentenced to a community service of sixty hours, of which forty hours suspended.

The military chamber accuses navigation officer Gerard de J. that he was on Friday 8 May 2020 during a mooring drink on the Zr. Ms. Karel Doorman assaulted three sailors in St. Maarten. The J. is said to have stroked a male colleague on the back and then buttocks. The sailor filed a report, after which two marechaussees came on board for an investigation. Then two colleagues from the school clapped: they too would have been lewd by De J., who had ‘had a number of drinks’.

The military chamber blames the man for committing the crime as an officer against three sailors, against whom he was in a certain position of power. When sentencing, the fact that the man has already been fired by Defense is taken into account. The sentence imposed is higher than the prosecutor’s demand – a suspended 40-hour community service sentence – because it ‘does more justice to the culpability and seriousness of the crime’.
