Tropical storm ‘Grace’ advances in the Caribbean towards Haiti The Caribbean country, which has suffered a magnitude 7.2 earthquake, could face heavy rains on Monday night

The National Hurricane Center forecast of the advance of Storm Grace.

Tropical Storm Grace, the seventh of the 2021 hurricane season in the Atlantic, has formed in the waters of the Caribbean during the morning of Saturday and is strengthening in a advance that points towards the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The latter country is recovering from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook the west of the island on Saturday morning and left at least 300 dead.

During the afternoon of Saturday, the storm was located 25 kilometers from the island of Guadeloupe (French territory) and was heading towards the Lesser Antilles with winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour, as reported by the National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC). The US and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Martin and St. Bartholomew are under storm warning, as are St. Kitts and Nevis, Monteserrat, Saba, and St. Eustatius.

The strengthening of the storm in the next few hours has its sights mainly on Haiti, as the rains are expected to intensify during the night of Monday, which could make it difficult to search for survivors of the earthquake. The NHC warns that heavy rainfall can cause flooding and landslides in the country. “Grace is moving rapidly west. A movement towards the west-northwest is expected with a gradual decrease in the speed of translation over the next few days ”, indicates the latest report from the center. So far, the NHC estimates that Grace will advance to Cuba as a tropical storm.

The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently released its updated forecast for the current season, according to which above-average activity will be recorded in the Atlantic. Nearing the middle of the current hurricane season, which officially began on June 1, seven tropical storms have been counted: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred and Grace.
