Sint Maarten To Vaccinate 34,000 People On island Of More Than 41,000

The first corona vaccines were delivered in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom in mid-February. The vaccination program has now gained momentum: on almost all islands, about half of the total number of adults has been vaccinated at least once against COVID-19.

Until now, Curaçao, with about 158,000 inhabitants, has taken the most injections. More than 74,000 residents of the island have had at least one shot against COVID-19. 28,500 of them also received a second vaccine and were therefore fully vaccinated.

The aim is to vaccinate at least 106,000 people on the island, about 85 percent of the adult population. With the injections so far, more than 60 percent of adults have received at least one vaccine.

On Curaçao people could register for vaccination from February 24. Initially, the elderly and people in the medical sector were eligible, but since the beginning of April anyone over the age of eighteen can apply. Curaçao residents receive the corona vaccine from BioNTech / Pfizer.
About 54 percent of adults in Aruba get vaccinated
Aruba also uses the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine and has now administered it to about 54,000 residents. Nearly 22,000 of them have also received a second injection.

Last week, about 54 percent of adults had been injected at least once. The aim is to vaccinate 75 to 80 percent of adults against the corona virus.

Bonaire has already vaccinated more than half, St. Maarten less
On the island of Bonaire, which has about twenty thousand inhabitants, almost twelve thousand people have been vaccinated at least once. About 4,500 of them have also received a second dose of the vaccine from BionNTech / Pfizer.

Sint Maarten has the ambition to vaccinate a total of 34,000 people on the island with more than 41,000 inhabitants. About seventeen thousand people have now registered for a vaccination. Nearly 14,000 people have received one dose of the vaccine, 7,090 of whom have also received a second injection.

St. Eustatius and Saba have pinned the population in one go
The special municipalities of St. Eustatius and Saba, with 3,100 and almost 2,000 inhabitants respectively, administered the corona vaccine in one go to all residents of the island.

Especially on Saba, many residents have responded to the call to get vaccinated: 85 percent of the adult population has now received two doses of the Moderna vaccine. As a result, the island was virtually able to let go of the corona measures on May 1.

St. Eustatius is not that far yet: the new relaxation phase can only be implemented when 50 percent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated. Last week, 879 people had received a vaccination against COVID-19, which amounts to about 37 percent.

Just like in the Netherlands, the islands also have a target date by which all residents who want to have had at least one injection. For the time being, that target date is June 1, before the start of the hurricane season.
