ORANJESTAD – An Aruban mother was sentenced in June to four years in prison for sexually abusing her two children.
That happened between 2011 and 2017. The children were not even ten years old when the abuse started. The verdict was published yesterday.
The verdict is largely based on the statements of the two children.
According to the mother’s lawyer, that would be unreliable, because they differ from each other on certain points.
But the judge does not agree. According to him, the two explanations also correspond with regard to the setting and the mother’s behavior.
In addition, the children’s emotions that were observed when the children told about the sexual abuse contribute to the reliability of the children’s statements.

The sexual abuse took place in the home of the mother and the children, a place where the victims should have felt especially safe in the presence of their mother, according to the Court.
The suspect forced sexual acts on the victims and with her actions only had an eye for the satisfaction of her own sexual needs and did not take into account the feelings of the victims, especially her own children. By acting in this way, the suspect has grossly infringed the physical and psychological integrity of the young victims, according to the judge.
The Court of First Instance also looked at the psychological report that had been drawn up in order to determine the sentence.
This established that the mother has a low-level intelligence, but that there are no indications of a personality or developmental disorder.
The suspect sees the difference between right and wrong and can oversee the consequences of her own behaviour.
The psychologist considers the suspect fully responsible. The risk of recidivism without treatment and supervision is estimated as low to moderate.
